With XRAY’s no-compromise, high-competition focus, the X12’21 is offered in two versions again this year, with each one equipped for the demands of different track conditions out of the box.
Whether on low to medium-grip tracks which are typical in Europe, or on super-high grip tracks which are typical in the US, there is an X12 to fit each occasion. Both choices are built on the same core platform with interchangeable parts.
The aluminum chassis and rear POD have a completely all-new design and shape. The chassis was redesigned to accommodate the all-new front Tweak-Free Suspension and the all-new rear Tweak-Free POD System. The side link mounting system was redesigned as well and is mounted directly to the chassis and the chassis features new slots for adjustment of the servo mount position. The chassis and rear POD edges are beveled, for less resistance to the ground during cornering.
Both EU and US Edition kits include an aluminum chassis as stock equipment this year. The EU version includes the flex alu chassis with more cut-outs better suited for low to medium grip conditions. The US version includes solid alu version, which has less cut-outs, for minimal flex making the car more stable and predictable in higher traction situations.
An optional 2.5mm graphite chassis is available as an additional tuning choice, and is a good option for low grip carpet racing, as well as asphalt.
The rear of the X12 has been completely redesigned and features the all-new Tweak-Free POD Mounting System.
The all-new POD parts include new aluminum bulkheads and new graphite upper and lower alu pod plates. The new mounting system improves traction and stability of the car and eliminates tweak issues after crashes.
The all-new graphite upper plate was redesigned to mount to the bulkheads with centering pins and 4 screws to secure the assembly in proper alignment and to minimize the chances of tweak after an impact on the track.
The rear POD also features completely redesigned one-piece bulkheads to achieve maximum durability. The new bulkheads allow for rear axle height adjustment via traditional eccentric bushings.
All-new aluminum Tweak-Free Pod Mounting System improves traction and stability of the car and eliminates tweak issues after crashes. The new system allows for a significantly lowered roll center, lowered center of gravity, and pivot height adjustment using different shims.
The all-new pod mounting position choices include the standard rearward mounting position where the center pivot is located in-line with the side link pivot balls on the rear pod plate, and the new forward location that places the pivot 2mm forward of the link mounting points. This adjustment has a significant effect on the cornering feel:
Forward - gives a good balance between front and rear traction, and is well suited for most conditions.
Rearward - gives the most steering, and most free rear end, especially suited for high grip carpet.
The all-new bulkheads are a 1-piece tweak-free design which is more rigid and robust. The new lower profile of the bulkheads and redesigned upper plate help to reduce the overall CG of the assembly.
The new bulkheads feature centering pins on the top and bottom surfaces that align the upper and lower pod plates during assembly and prevent movement between the components during a crash. To further enhance the assembly’s strength and resistance to tweak, the upper pod plate now uses 4 mounting screws to secure it to the bulkheads
The 1 piece bulkheads in the X12’21 utilize eccentric bushing inserts for the rear axle height adjustment.
To significantly reduce the rotating mass and improve steering, both EU & US Editions include a super-lightweight graphite rear axle.
The US Edition includes a solid axle for high grip levels.
The EU Edition includes a race proven ball differential; better suited for low to medium grip situations.
The all-new Tweak-Free Front Suspension was completely redesigned to achieve maximum durability, stability and to remove tweak issues after a crash. The new front suspension design features fewer components, reducing the mass of components mounted high above the chassis plate in previous designs, resulting in a lower CG.
A single Tweak-free lower graphite arm that replaces previous composite arms for maximum rigidity are part of the front suspension flex adjustment.
New steering blocks feature updated Ackermann positions offer improved steering characteristics.
The Tweak Free Front Suspension features the heavy-duty 4mm kingpin system that retains its geometry after an impact to help complete a race without any adverse effects on handling.
All-new big bore front springs with larger diameter allows for a smoother and more precise front suspension dampening.
The Tweak-Free Front Suspension incorporates a flex adjustment system with three different settings for various track conditions.
All-new steering block is redesigned to work with the new 4mm king pin axle, features new Ackerman positions for improved steering, and is moulded from a special graphite composite material for minimum friction against the kingpin.
The steering blocks use ultra-precise wheel axles CNC-machined from premium HUDY Spring Steel™ that are additionally hardened and hand ground for precision fitment.
The 4mm adjustable steering turnbuckles are manufactured from lightweight aluminum.
All-new super-smooth, hardened steel 4mm kingpins provide the foundation for the Tweak Free Front Suspension. The kingpins have a new, stronger design with a machined 1.5° camber angle machined into the kingpin for precise suspension geometry. Optional 1.0° and 2.0° camber king-pins are available to adjust the camber in fixed steps.
All-new graphite side braces are mounted to the rear brace, and to the chassis via aluminum posts, and offer three flex setting alternatives to adjust the chassis characteristics for different track conditions.
The center shock has new geometry with the mounting point moved further back for quicker direction change, as well as improved on-power steering.
The shock features a new stiffer spring for improved steering and response.
The fully-adjustable shock features an aluminum shock body that is hard-anodized for ultra durability. The fine-threaded shock body allows for quick and easy shock spring preload adjustment.
Tiny, thin shock membrane gives smooth dampening characteristics, and a super-soft silicone shock O-ring gives super-smooth operation while preventing oil leakage.
The ultra-finely finished shock shaft with precise-molded composite shock piston ensures optimum shock oil flow and smooth shock absorber action.
All-new ultra-low CG servo mounting system places the servo directly on the chassis to improve the steering response, and with adjustable grooves in the chassis to place both small and micro size servos into the absolute center of the chassis.
The servo holders feature an additional hole to fit micro servos such as Sanwa SRG-HR, HS and PGS-HR, while the standard positions still accommodate the standard 1/12 servo dimensions.
Unique & innovative fully-adjustable servo mount allows easy adjustment of the servo position. The servo is attached to independent mounts that are mounted using a groove in the chassis. Depending on the size of your servo, you can easily install and adjust the servo and its position to the center of the chassis.
The all-new X12’21 mounts the side links directly to the chassis for better consistency, rigidity, and a lower CG. The chassis retains the two choices for the front pivot location, with the inner mounting position offering more on-power steering.
The rear link brace was redesigned to accommodate the new side braces and is part of the Multi-Flex setting.
The rear link brace allows for a wider range of battery placement adjustment as well as featuring the convenient O-ring battery mounting system.
The graphite rear link brace holds the side tubes as well as the side springs and body posts. It also functions as a backstop for the battery pack.
The alu bulkheads allow for very quick & easy ride height adjustment using eccentric axle holder bushings. The axle height is adjustable in 1/2mm increments over a 5mm range. Smart & easy.
All-new front bumper design and new size to meet new racing organization rules.
Machined from premium 2.5mm graphite, the brace is flexible yet rigid enough to withstand serious crashes.
The optional XRAY self-designed, revolutionary, super-smooth gear diff is a direct replacement for the ball-differential.
Using the optional gear differential makes the car more stable and easier to drive, especially in high-traction conditions. The gear diff increases on-power steering which is needed on almost all types of tracks. A “must have” for every racer.
The complete gear differential set includes a composite case and cover, precision-molded internal satellite gears made from special XRAY-developed composite material, all ensuring long lifespan and super-smooth efficient operation. A super-strong hollow steel shaft ensures maximum reliability and strength.
The advantage of the gear diff is that it is maintenance-free. When the diff is correctly built, there is no need for maintenance for a very long time, no need for frequent oil changes, and no leakage due to a superior sealing system.
The X12 chassis features XRAY self-developed front wheelbase adjustment possibility. The chassis has two positions for front suspension mounting; the whole front suspension can be easily moved by 2mm frontwards or rearwards.
The long wheelbase is the same wheelbase as previous X12 cars, and is recommended for larger tracks or tracks with longer sweepers. A long wheelbase works well at low-to-medium traction tracks when more stability is desired. Also better suited to the Open Modified classes to make the car smoother and less twitchy.
The short wheelbase allows the car to rotate better in the middle of the corner to maintain cornering speed. Recommended for tight, technical tracks or tracks with numerous hairpin corners. The short wheelbase works well at medium-to-high traction tracks where a lot of steering is needed. Also better suited to the Stock and blinky classes
The front suspension uses ride height adjustment shims for very quick, precise, and hassle-free ride height adjustment depending on track conditions. The set of 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6mm ride height adjustment shims are included for fine tuning.
The all-new graphite backstop for the cross-chassis battery alignment alternative is stronger than the previous composite brace for a more secure battery retention.
The all-new rear link brace & battery backstop allows for a wider range of battery placement adjustment.
The brace includes two holes into which the adjustable battery backstop is inserted. The battery backstop has 4 positions which allow the batteries to be moved more forward. The distance between each position is 2mm, so in total the battery can be moved up to 6mm more forward.
Lateral damping side tubes provide ultra-smooth side damping, making the car easier to drive and easier to work on. The outer aluminum tube and inner Delrin® tube operate ultra-smoothly.
The aluminum rear hubs are machined from lightweight aircraft aluminum, specially lightened and black-coated for stylish look. The rear left aluminum wheel hub features a center-balanced clamping mount system, ensuring secure mounting while eliminating vibration and run out.
Tiny yet robust servo saver protects the servo from impact damage. Easy Ackermann adjustment is made via shims mounted below steering block pivot balls.
Side springs are placed directly on the chassis for smooth and precise movement.
Precision-molded spur gears are made from XRAY's exclusive composite material, ensuring true running, super-quiet operation, and robustness for handling powerful motors. A range of optional spur gears for fine tuning is available.
X12 includes a foam bumper which improves the durability of the car and protects the front in hard collisions. Hand-cut from specially-developed foam material, the bumper is very light, yet very strong.
Robust body posts with fully-adjustable body holders; optional super-fine +1 or +2mm body backstops available optionally for even more super-fine body height adjustment.
The layout of the electronics and position of individual sections of the car were designed with optimum weight distribution and balance in mind.
The steering servo is located in a lay-down position for lowest CG at the chassis center, and the layout of the chassis allows the batteries to be placed either cross or inline.
Depending on battery configuration, the ESC and receiver can be placed in various positions for ideal weight transfer and balance.
HUDY Exclusive Silicone Oils are manufactured in Europe and each batch is laboratory tested and calibrated to ensure the highest possible consistency and quality from batch to batch. Based on the industry-standard cSt rating, the new line of oils will be easy to identify, adjust, and feel.
When following any set-up sheets by XRAY or XRAY team drivers, you can be sure that the oils you will get for your car are exactly same as those used by the factory racing team, thus ensuring very exacting set-ups and handling.
A full set of 10 high-speed, blue-sealed and steel ball-bearings are used throughout the drivetrain to ensure maximum efficiency. All of the bearings are degreased and oiled with Aero Shell® Fluid 12 for maximum smoothness and long life.
High-precision, HUDY Spring Steel™ upper pivot balls and composite lower pivot balls ensure smooth & precise movement of the front suspension.
